3rd match - Postmortem

It was an exciting match which went down to the last minute. We had almost pulled it out before dishing out the victory to the opponent. I feel we did ‘most’ of the things correctly. But that’s how the game goes. A very few tit-bits here and there, that was what has cost the match for us. The larger picture might easily point the finger at that crucial over bowled by Rajesh, but not really that’s the only reason for the failure. Many other things could have been done correctly. We have a lot of things to be carried from this match. The first of the real good match, where we had been encountered by a real decent team which knew a few things about playing the game, who had a good bowling attack backed up by an agile and athletic fielding. We can’t expect the entire tournament to be a cake-walk just like how the first two matches turned out to be. These are the kind of teams whom we should be able to tackle and come out unscathed.

Rather than doing the blame game lets first try and look at the positives that can be carried from the match. The first striking positive aspect is the efforts of our strike bowlers. The kind of start which we got from Rajiv, Param, Bala and Koushik proves how vital it is to stick to the spread-out field and one side attack. The strategy was almost perfectly executed. Every over after the first four balls were restricted for a run or two, we immediately spread ourselves in a bid to ensure that the over does not get spoiled by a boundary of the last deliveries. The line was perfect with nothing given on their legs. The fact that we gave 48 runs in three overs (15+15+18) and only 68 from the rest 17 overs (at just 4 per over) necessitates the importance of sticking to the ploy of 6:3 field with the off-side packed and bowling outside off stump. More often than not, the strategy will work because not many people have the ability to barge down the track or try and convert an out-side off-stump ball to the leg side. Even if they are going to do it they will be doing it at a risk of playing across. That gives us a chance of a LBW, bowled or even a leading edge. It also emphasizes the significance of bowling one side and not giving anything whatsoever down the legs. ‘Very easily said than done’ you might argue, but that’s what we should try and do if we are to restrict teams from building huge score. The first two overs from Rajiv, Bala, me and the entire spell from Param, if anyone would have noticed them, there was not a single ball that was to their legs. We were helped by the fact that the umpires didn’t call a few balls as wide. Still the line was such that they had no option but to split the off-side (which not many people can successfully do unless they take the aerial route). So guys, lets stick to this strategy throughout the tournament. I feel this is the best available option. An off-spinner like Koushik can probably resort to the 5:4 with the short-mid wicket coming in place. I have tried drawing a picture of how the field should be for bowlers like Bala, Param, Me and Rajiv. Other bowlers including Koushik can remove the deep extra-cover and put him as a short-mid

One more positive aspect is definitely our ‘stand-in’ wicket keeper. He has really been doing a great job for us. If not for his agile work behind the stumps we would have really had a horrendous time in saving the byes. So remember that in case Shivaram is not present for a match we might straightaway add 10 to 15 runs to the opponent’s total.

Now, coming to the area of improvement or rather concern. Batting is definitely not upto the potential. We definitely have it in us to score 140 plus runs on a consistent basis. People like Rajiv, Bala, me or Appu can provide the stability to the innings or holding one end, but to boost the runs we still depend on the likes of Rajesh, Koushik or Shivaram. If Rajesh clicks then we can definitely look at a projected score of 160 plus, but till he strikes form we somehow have to find a way on the top who can go after the bowling. Probably we can look at Shivaram opening the innings (in the absence of Faizal) along with Appu. On the bowling department as already said Rajiv, Bala, Param and Koushik are our main strike. If all the four strike bowlers have given away only 5 per over then the fifth bowling option can be compromised for say even 30 runs in 4 overs (that would mean a total of just 110 runs in 20 overs). On the contrary if unfortunately one or two of them have a bad over each (just like the other day where Rajiv and Bala together went for 30 runs between them in two overs) then the fifth bowler becomes all the more important. So we have a lot of things to be considered and again it all depends on the combination which we are going to play for the upcoming matches.

With regard to the tournament I think all three teams which we have played so far have lost atleast a game each. That means we still have a chance of making it to the top of the table. However, one very very important thing to be made notice of is the chance that is being deprived for the likes of Ranga, Prakash, Nithya, Faizal, Krishna, Sundar and for that matter even Girish. In our attempt to pursue victory everytime and try and squeeze in the best of the resources we might end up failing to lose the ultimate objective of starting this team. At the end of the day everyone should get to participate and get to involve themselves in the action in the middle and have fun. It shouldn’t be dominated by guest players or the same 7 or 8 members doing things in the middle. Others also should be given some footage in the action. Ranga has already voiced his concern about people not being given role to do anything other than just picking the ball from deep and throwing back to the bowler/keeper. I whole-heartedly acknowledge his opinion. Hence its all the more important for the ‘confirmed 5 or 6’ members (who get to play all the games) to perform in such a manner that we have room for others also to experiment and play/enjoy the game. In case they go for runs or fail with the bat we should be able to perform that much even more so that we don’t end up losing. With the kind of situation we are in now (2:1) and one more expectedly strong team coming up in Slash Support, probably after winning that fourth match we should start looking at giving opportunities to others to perform. After-all the 6 of us alone shouldn’t be enjoying (in the name of providing solidity to the team) the efforts of all the 13 members who have contributed for the starting of Cric-cruisers…….

regards
Sri Kumar J

Hi Guys

We Played a real good match and the fact that we put in a reasonably good job in the fielding department( leaving out couple os slip ups in the entire duratioon of the game)augurs well for our team. The fact that we do not get to practice our skills and we still come up a consistent performance in the field is certainly a positive that we can take out of this game.

In batting i'm off the opinion that we need an attacking batsman who does not mind throwing his wicket away at the top of the order. The first 5 overs we need to score between 45 to 50 runs possibly for the loss of two wickets. That would seriously set the tempo for the batsman in the late overs. every team that we have faced comes up with the lollipop bowlers once the ball becomes old which makes the job of hitting tough even for capable guys like Rajesh ala inzamam. May be we should try him in the top 3 in the batting order. lets give him the required confidence b'coz if we fires we would certainly end up scoring 180 to 200.

In bowling The frontline bowlers have to be consistent with the primary focus on run saving and not on wicket taking. When we try to pick wickets we tend to experiment too much and spray the ball around. The fact that we bowled tidily in the last match enabled srikumar to pick crucial wickets in the end when thay were going for runs and played rash shots.

One last feed back from my side was that i could have atleast bowled one over in the last match considering that i have the wicket taking luck with the most inocuos of the deliveries and the fact that i have bowled economically in all the matches that i have bowled (including friendlies) except for the first match of the tournament in mogappair. some food for thought!!!!

Lets continue our good effort and win the remaining games and even think of winning the tournament at some stage!!!

OUr first problem - and My suggestion......... everyweek u get a doubt which 11 of them are playing and who r all sitting at corner.. after all cuming to the ground you people are deciding, and selecting one person, wid partially trusting him.. if 13 guys are there for game of 11 players, have to make 3 of them sit.. if three are just fair players and inexperience to play in league matches you do pinky ponkey and select one that too trusting him partially and use them at last as a spair part. other 2 sitting simply give comment and argue that they mite have done even better if they had been given a chance.. it creates miss understanding.. (pls dont laugh while ready) ..my suggestion --. if ranga nithi prakash and krishna are in slot excess of 10 players and u can take only player in the 11 team squad just go ahead.. .. this 3 are not much experience and cannot b equalent to rajiv or rajesh on performance basis.. take only ranga make others (nithi prakash and krish) sit and watch the match.. make them clear they would definitly get a chance in the next match and luk their confident level and interest of watching d match too).. ..but use one person (rang) to the extreme.. let's see how he perform.. dont trust that person partially and use him partially.. trust him fully and make use of him fully... sothat he gets confident and he itself could realize how he perform.. bcoz of that one guys one over bowling or batting may not affect much. incase it affect also, that too for some extend.. incase if he perform its gud for team.. u can make use of it.. incase if he didnot not prob.. he wont ask u for onemore chance.. coz cric cruisers is formed for kmhss.. but only 3 to 4 where playing... taking outsiders like parames, girish, shivaram appu koushik bala are exactly rite decision to balance the victory for criccruisers team. they played a major role for the teams victory. they play like professional and performs of this guys are even morethan enough for the teams victory. but even ensure that management should trust and use the guys like sundar krishna prakash nithi ranga and all others talent to sumextend. apart from this am bound to cric cruisers management decision.. Hi All

A lot has been told by Srikumar with regard to bowling and batting.
My only concern is that we have to do our basics right which sri has informed by through the field map.Though it might not be easy to bowl at one side of the stumps all the time ,but it is possible for the frontline bowlers and i cannot think of not more than 50 runs from me,rajiv and kaushik. So even if the opponents scores 70 in the next 8overs. we will probably end up in giving away 120 runsin total.

This applies when we bowl first .But when we bowl second we have to make sure that the partime bowlers just stick on to the basics of just bowling in to the stumps. In any format of the game, its only the batsman who has the pressure has he has to look for runs always. But for bowlers even a bad ball would fetch us wicket just like rajesh's case if bowled properly.

Im not taking away anything from our efforts in putting up a fight .It was a good bowling performance from all of us.

I seriously wan to comment on our batting as we have to score a minimum of 150 runs everytime we go in to bat irrespective of the conditions and the opponents. The reason being our batting strength. We have to plan in such a way that we use the newball well .Someone like shivram or say even Rajesh can open the batting and throw the bat. so even if we get 40 runs from first 5 overs. it would be easy for us in the middle and again in the last 5 we need good hitters .So it comes like first 5 overs we sacrifice 1 or 2 hitters and last five we keep 1 or 2 hitters and in the middle overs, rajiv, srikumar and kaushik can steady the innings.

Mr captain, please putforth this plan in the next match while we bat (batting 1st or 2nd)
I seriously think of Rajesh opening the batting and dont know what the big man thinks or the others.
And i believe he would do all his talking in the bat in the next match. Lets not put too much concern or pressure in his batting and leave him free and he would do well for us.

And for the 1 over from him, it happens in cricket and in big stages as well. But Srikumar learned a good lession of not to experiment when it comes to final overs and also in the innings start. At any match start and end should be bowled by frontline bowlers and captain would take this forward in the next match
Sorry to write this long comment but even i didnt had any work today
Lets win the next match and afterall we play to win .

Cheers
Paramesh

@girish

Actually yes.. u have the nick of getting rid of partnerships..we can use it in the forthcoming matches on a serious note... but one suggestion.. if u have had a thought that u cud have done it.. why didnt u raise it to the skipper?? then there might have been a food for thought for him.

ppl like you who can bowl should have shown some intent like praveen did the other day to bowl the final over... but we never saw it coming so we had to go with rajesh since he is well experienced. thats the only reason for not throwing the ball to you on the penultimate 18th over... but your skills will be surely given a chance for display in the very next encounter. and we are sure that u can pick up wickets with your unorthodox kind of deliveries ;-) ( Just as u calim it to be )

Rajiv M said...

@nithi

your point is accepted son. but to tackle your point of picking the eleven i would say.... the match itself is getting confirmed only 2 days before and by the time we get the confirmed list of attendees we invariably arrive on the day of the match.

whatever said and done,Only 11 can play a match and playing eleven will be decided only on the day of the match. cos now this team is closely knit.. and we dont mind taking suggestions from the other co-owners of this team who will be present for the match.

Srikumar, Rajesh, Ranga and i can even have a concall the day before and decide on the eleven.. but since CRICRUISERS is fully owned by its players we are against this concall plan just to avoid players standing against the decision of ours !! But If u feel the team has to be decided the day before... we dont mind doing it but give us an assurance on behalf of other players that there wont be any voices in the playing arena against the decision of the selected 11. We can implement it right away. ( Remember..if you are taking a decision now, that will be on behalf of... FAIZAL, KRISHNA, SUNDAR and PRAKASH ;-) well u decide it for yourself )

@param/Srikumar

How an experienced players like u both can say that plans fixed b4 the start of the match be implemented as it is. Having plan A is absolutely fine.. but in a game of cricket there should always be a plan B plotted if plan A fails and Plan C should be in hand to back up the failure of Plan B... you might not need any plans when we are up against teams like we faced in our first two encounters but we need it for sure when we face teams like CTS and Slash... as u said "its easier said than done" but since we are professionals... let us be one in every other department including planning.

We have a bunch of naturally talented players who dont even require a practice session before a game... but if not bowling and batting we atleast need a fielding practice b4 the start of play for sure.. saving 10-20 on the field in a 20 over match is damn very crucial.. we would have realised it in the last game.

But as far as field planning is concerned... fielding positions are always mobile and in a crucial match the skippers job is jus to take care of the field settings and nothing else. You are experienced so Look how the bowler is bowling and set him field thats it. Pls dont have a fixed mindset on fielding postions cos u will be confused when the bowler is vary. so its better not to have fixed field for any bowler..let the field be spread but dont have a fixed mindset of having a deep square leg and a deep point...cos we are not so proffesional to bowl to the field set by the skipper.thats my view on field settings.

Hi Rajiv

I wanted to comment on fielding , but since nobody here other than few are playing regular cricket and even while playing not very good fielders in nature. so we have to play to the best of our capabilities.Yes fielding is very important and i totally agree that we need to practice fielding .
To our luck we didnt had any skiers and if that would have happened , we would struggled.
But Again i feel if we do our basics right,we will surely competete with big teams especially in fielding

Rajiv M said...

absolutely... but i feel other than jus forming this team... srikumar, rajesh, you and i have not flown many things to our ppl proffesionally... i think we should start doing it since we have represented a decent level of cricket in the past 10 yrs or so and our guys are humble enough to listen to our gyaan ..hehe

Srikumar said...

guys..... was surprised and happy to receive such kind of reaction from ur end.... shows that each of us are really raring to go to the field and set things straight....

Srikumar said...

To rajiv...

Kandippa as u said we cant afford to hav a fixed field plan and compel the bowlers to bowl that way. On a bad day or against a good batsman things might change... so adhukku yettha maadhiri on the spot we shud be flexible enough to think of the ideal field positions... but wat i had drawn is "indha maadhiri vechu lets try sticking to one side". This is more sort of startin plan for every match. or a plan A for every match.... if this clicks kandippa we will restrict (like how param said four strike bowlers max 80 and next bowler even if he goes for 30 its less than run a ball). Plan A kku try pannalaam if on the centre it doesnt work appo situationkku yettha maadhiri let us proceed....

Srikumar said...

To param,

200% agree to the fact that someone who can go after the bowling shud open... so either ppl like me shud try changing our game or people like rajesh, shiva or even koushik shud try to go up the order and boost the scoring rate... if at all we stammer or stutter then me, rajiv, praveen and bala can try to anchor.... need to ask rajesh how comfortable he is at the top....

Srikumar said...

to girish...

machi i fully accept that u hav been under-utilised so far... it was jus that that day all the 4 main bowlers had done their job and becos in the morning i had a good game against one other CTS team i brought on myself... else actually i wud hav brought u and appu only to fill-in the fifth bowler...

to nithi.... rajiv sollardhae dhaan naanum solren.

to all.... yaar daa adhu oru commenta delete pannirukkardhu... rajiv neeyaa ????

Rajiv M said...

yeah naandhaan...ennoda commenta dhaan delete pannen..but i posted it again.

Hi Sri

I am sayin that your decision to bowl yourself is acceptable in the overall team perspective and you proved it right by picking those crucial wickets. If not the match would have got over by the 16th or 17th over itself. what i meant was i could have tried one over at some point. if i come good then you could have taken the call on continuing with me or not. Thats it, but on the field i always go by the captain's decision.

Rajiv

Just because i do not ask for bowling it doesn't mean that i shy away from the challenge. It's just that i do what ever i am asked to do to the best of my abilities.

So i am absolutely not in concurrence with your point of me not asking for the bowling and there by stayed away from the real challenge.

Girish said...

Sri

Your idea of 6 - 3 is the way to go about bowling and fielding. In the name of Plan B let's not look at the logic of setting fields for bad bowling.

When we play, i'm sure every one of us plays to win and there by we need not have excuses for bad bowling by mentioning about mis fields and dropped catches.

Hi Team,

Nice to see some serious discussions and constructive critics raised on the sole motto "we need to improve and make winning a habit " There has been a lot of positives for us to boost up our enthusiasm and motivation levels from the past matches...

The last match was real cracker of a contest & test to our abilities. We did fare well for most part of the game until the crucial moment to end up losing the game...A good wake up call for us at the right time of the tournament...Just one bad decision or bad performance would not soak us down in confidence.Lets stand up,be counted , take responsibility and perform when needed the most..

A word of praise for our wicket keeper siva ,must be mentioned. This guy has been doing commendable job... keep up the gud work dude !All our bowlers have also done a lot of gud work so far.....

My suggestions;
1) T20 is a game wherein we have to react fast, so like most of them agreed Plan A of bowling to 6:3 or 5:4 field will help us till we err somewhere.so like rajiv said a good ear for suggestions (other plans )and instant reaction to the situation by the skipper would help the team's winning cause.Of course Sri has so far been conducting the team with poise to perform.Rajiv and Bala with the new ball would be more effective as the swing can be used to the full extent.
2) T20 - in the batting dept. irrespective of we set or chase an innings we need to have people given the role in the batting order to attack 4m the word go. Like param said first 5 overs must have a score of atleast 40-50 for the loss of 1/ 2 wickets. A launch pad has to be set for the middle and late middle order batsmen to muscle out.
3) Moving Rajesh up the order.. guys i would like to mention a point as having him to face the slow medium pacers and spinners in the middle rather than some quicks at the top would be our best bet as his mere presence and just one stroke of aggression would bring a lot of loose balls which beckons to be hit.( need your comments as u guys have played closely for a long time )
3)sivaram to open the innings during chasing would be one ideal thing with either bala or abhi or Appu ...i somehow feel Appu can also set the tempo up in the top order ( need ur comments on this )
4) As far as the fielding concerns.... i feel its just a matter of few more games we may show a lot of progress in it too... May be a practice session during the nets would settle it.

Guys i am ready to take up the role of setting tempo in the middle @ no:4 spot regularly..i have been more used to this slot for a long period...

Sorry for such a lengthy comment.. but the situation made me pitch in with the same....

Love to see we make winning a habbit.
